Would you pay for Stylebible?
Tuesday May 26, 2009 / Categories: Websites, Content
If you want up to the minute information on the best sample sales, restaurants, salons and places to go, you’re spoilt for choice.
Stylebible.com charges for premium content
Chiconomise and Daily Candy are just two lifestyle email newsletters which offer tips for free, whilst Stylebible charges for access to similar content.
According to Stylebible’s Racheal Cooper “Membership is designed to pay for itself. If premium members take up offers or go to the higher end sample sales, the savings more than cover the cost of membership”.
Stylebible membership does come with perks (see here).
But are they enough to make you cough up £120 per year?

I am a massive fan of both Daily Candy and Chiconomise. Certainly wouldnt pay for StyleBible because as you say, you can get the info from the other too. Plus when Chiconomise launches (which I hear is soon) I imagine it will cover a lot more of the info that is on Style Bible too.

My girlfriend is a member of this site (a present from me) and always uses it to get discounts on the things she wants most in life - so I’m not complaining, in fact she says it is the best present I ever bought her!!

I’ve always had good value from Stylebible, I opt to be a premium member instead of using the free version but that is only because I have not seen some of the invite only sample sales listed on the other sites; I went to the Mulberry and Vivienne Westwood sale last year and they were fantastic.

I have recently become a member of stylebible and I think it is fab, I love all of the up-to-the-minute information I receive and the sneaky inside reviews, all of this makes it value for money.
Do I think it is worth £120 per year...absolutely!

Nope, I wouldn’t pay for Stylebible. I think the concept is fab but in this day and age, you can’t charge for this kind of info when people like Chiconomise are doing a fab job of providing it for free (I am addicted to that site!)

How long to do you think sites like Stylebible and Chiconomise are going to be around if users expect everything for free?
Both these sites have some really amazing offers and both list sample sales that literally save you hundreds of pounds. Someone has to make those contacts, broker those deals, write copy, create artwork and handle the administration. Simply put, staff cost money.
I’d also add that these sites were both started by young female entrepreneurs, they haven’t been started by big publishers, they don’t have venture capital behind them and yet they are often the first to report fab deals and save you a fortune at sample sales. Not only should they be commended for their achievements but also rewarded for them.
Fab concepts don‘t evolve without support and without revenue the Internet will fast become a very dull place. Objective editorial is already being replaced with advertising disguised as editorial and I personally would happily pay for a site that gives me genuine enjoyment and offers me hundreds of pounds worth of savings.
